This new website is dedicated to the memory of all those who served with No.149 (East India) Squadron.
The new website will hopefully be a focal point for relatives and researchers interested in No. 149 (East India) Squadron. Many of you may be aware of the recent news that Mr Alan Fraser, who single-handedly ran the previous website, Stirling Pilot, has decided to take a well-earned rest and regrettably close the site. Alan was keen that all the previous years of research and hard work he had put into the site should not be lost. After Alan and I discussed the site, the catalyst for this new site was formed. This new website will feature specific features such as a comprehensive database, a gallery of historical photos and original wartime documents, and bios of individual airmen and crews. Plus a avenue to share details and memories.
Alan's presence will not be lost. He will continue to manage the 149 Squadron Facebook page and oversee the activity on this new site. I am sure you will agree that we are deeply grateful for Alan's years of tireless and dedicated service to No.149 (East India) Squadron. His invaluable contributions have laid the foundation for this new website, and I will ensure that his legacy continues.
I should now introduce myself. My name is Steve (Smudger) Smith, and for the past twenty years, I have been the No.218 (Gold Coast) Squadron Association Historian. There are very close links between our squadrons, and it was these links that brought Alan and me together many years ago. We have been members of the Mildenhall Register for more years than we would like to remember. Apart from my interest in No.218 (Gold Coast) Squadron, I am fascinated with all things No.3 Group RAF Bomber Command. For the past 35 years, I have collected a wealth of material from the National Archive, IWM, RAF Hendon, Air Historical Branch, etc. That fascination with No.3 Group has allowed me to have published twelve books on the squadrons that served within the group. I am not an expert on No.149 Squadron, but I know enough that it was one of the finest squadrons to serve in No.3 Group and RAF Bomber Command and I will do my utmost to ensure the squadron's and Alan's legacy continues.
